Soon after Yueliang began to play, Aku’s claw tips ceased their drumming. The Shogun’s eyes turned slowly in their sockets and his punishing gaze fell upon the fare maiden below. Even to his immortal ears, the melody was enchanting. Each note strummed by her fingertips captured his attention and coaxed it away from his inner turmoil.

When her voice joined in, the demon lord straightened slowly on his throne. Never before had he heard a mortal voice so exquisite and sweet. It made him question if she was truly mortal at all. As Yueliang continued to play and sing, Aku felt the tension in his being lift and melt away. Before long, his eyes closed and it was clear from the content expression on his face that he had fallen victim to her charms just like the emperor. Unlike the emperor, however, he was not asleep and when the music ended, Aku opened his dark eyes.

You are a true master of your trade,” he spoke calmly. “Your skill is not of this world and I desire to see more.” Indeed, if her dancing was as great as her musical ability, Aku wanted to see it for himself.

Release the lute and I shall play for you…” The instrument in her lap began to levitate as if by an unseen force as Aku enacted his magic upon it. Like an object bewitched, the strings began to vibrate in a traditional melody. The music lacked the soul of a true musician as Aku “played” merely from the memories held within the strings, but it would do.

“My audience deserves only the best performance from me, your highness.“, she said as she gave a small bow. So far, he’s liked what she has showed him which meant that she has a higher chance of being alive after this.

Her lute floated, remaining suspended in the air as the strings moved by themselves. The performer didn’t believe in deities but this creature certainly has otherworldly powers.

The music felt inhuman to her ears. Still, it was familiar to her and she had to put on a show for him.

There was little time to prepare so she immediately stood up and danced. She leaped through the air and swirled around the spacious room, letting her clothing billow around her. The thin material made her seem like she was floating in the air, letting one foot touch the ground before taking off again.

Yet, her face didn’t show any discomfort. It looked like it was another daily activity for her. She smiled, batted her lashes and even blew him a kiss.

When the lute stopped playing, she walked towards him. The dancer moved in such a way that it seemed she was merely gliding across the floor. It was obvious that this was a person who dedicated their entire being to the arts.

“I hope you liked it, your highness.“ There was no hint of tiredness. Her pleasant smile remained on her face.

“Would you please accept me as the tribute for today?“

Yueliang seemed to float and swirl above the floor like evening mist over a pond as she danced. It was a mesmerizing sight to behold and Aku regarded her contently, his eyes watchful and curious like a cat observing a bird. When the dance and music ended, the lute was lowered back into her arms.

In an arc of black fire, Aku moved down from his throne to stand before her. No longer was he the height of a building, though at roughly 8 feet tall, he still towered over her. Delighted by her performance, his curved fangs were bared in a smile and he gave her a round of applause.

Your tribute has been accepted!” he spoke thunderously, then clasped his claws behind his back. “Indeed, you have pleased the almighty Shogun of Sorrow like none other. By what name shall I call you, o’ fair one?”

you-are-my-whole-world

“Huh… I can’t deny the fact that the words you’re saying are somewhat true. I guess there are some good things about being an immortal program after all. Although it’s not very pleasant to be.. left out, while your mortal companions are having fun. But, to each their own I suppose~.” Monika shrugged and giggled, covering her mouth with the tips of her fingers.

“Although, I always wondered how it feels to be an immortal outside of the digital world? Does it have some good sides as well? Enjoyable ones? Or maybe not? Is there any possible danger for beings like you out there?”

Monika surely wasn’t the one who’d be satisfied with small talk. She really wanted to know more. Knowledge is power, as many would say.

Aku’s grin seemed only to grow sharper as he spoke.

Most immortal beings possess weaknesses that make them vulnerable. Some are reduced to dust when exposed to sunlight. Others require a mortal host to sustain them. And there are a few who are cursed to live forever when all they seek is death. For them, immortality is the greatest punishment of all.”

The demon chuckled darkly to himself. Then, he unclasped his hands from behind his back and raised his pointed claws in a dramatic presentation.

But I, AKU, have no such weaknesses! For you see, nothing of this world can harm me. That is why I shall rule this world for eons untold.”

She was bold to enter his throne room when not even his guards would dare. Bolder yet to assume he would simply allow her to leave unpunished if she failed to provide him with adequate entertainment. Judging by his look of disinterest, it would appear the yokai was perpetually irate and unappeasable.

Aku was silent for a moment as he deliberated sending her away before giving her a chance to show her talents. But as the seconds ticked by, he realized that perhaps some music might facilitate his brooding. Besides, she had brought the instrument so she may as well demonstrate what she could do with it.

Very well,” he growled after a brief eternity. “Begin.

Yueliang sat on the floor and propped the large instrument on her lap. The veil was getting in the way of the strings so she removed it, revealing a face that could rival a celestial maiden’s. Long lashes and small, plump lips with golden eyes and hair, she looked like she stepped out of a fairy tale.

Slender fingers moved across the strings. It was enchanting and melodic, an ordinary person would be attracted to it instantly.

Then, she started to sing. A song about a pair of lovers who stayed true to each other even in times of trouble.

Magnificent.

She had honed her voice to the point where she can make the emperor fall asleep, have each of his wives plot against her and charm his entire army.

“What do you think, your highness? I would’ve loved to dance too but there is no one who can play for me.“

Soon after Yueliang began to play, Aku’s claw tips ceased their drumming. The Shogun’s eyes turned slowly in their sockets and his punishing gaze fell upon the fare maiden below.
