There came a persistent knock at Sixer’s door. “SIXFORD. It is I, Aku. There is something I wish to speak with you about.”

Sixer peers out the door with a cautious expression. Aku doesn’t look too happy from his perspective. “Ah, yes? What is it?”

“I know. He made that clear enough when he popped into my dimension and tried to ask where Azura had gone.” Sixer’s expression shifted at the memory. “I’m glad he couldn’t get past the barrier, and that Star was able to kick him out through a wormhole before he tried anything.”

He paused, and his expression shifted to frustration. “I still have that charm Trashy made to help repel Gaster – I haven’t been able to get it to Azura yet. Dammit.”

He shook his head. “Regardless, I agree that there is danger in Azura losing the stone. I don’t know very much about it either, as it isn’t something that I’m interested in obtaining.”

He was still trying to figure out his own limits; he didn’t want to try and figure out more power by getting his hands on something like that.

“Keeping Gaster away from Azura and what she carries with her is something that I intend to assist in, if I can. But as much as that is the case, I still count Thoth as a friend. If there is something that can be done to make sure that I can keep my friendship and keep Gaster away, I’m willing to look into it.”

A Gaster repulsion charm? Now this was new. He’d seen Azura just the other day but he knew nothing of her current whereabouts and couldn’t deliver the charm to her himself.

I hope your friend will see reason and practice restraint. I do not wish to do battle with him but I will do what I must to protect Azura. She is like a daughter to me.” His hard expression softened for just a moment before Aku shifted in his seat again. He felt like he’d sunk deeper into the sofa somehow.

Who is this Star you speak of?” he asked, resting an elbow on the armrest. “Wormhole creation is the mark of a powerful magic user.

There came a persistent knock at Sixer’s door. “SIXFORD. It is I, Aku. There is something I wish to speak with you about.”

Sixer peers out the door with a cautious expression. Aku doesn’t look too happy from his perspective. “Ah, yes? What is it?”

“I understand where you’re coming from; I’m uneasy about his attempted allying with Gaster as well. However, as knowledge the concept is wholly neutral, I can’t fault him for being attracted to someone who is searching for that sort of thing. Knowledge is neither good nor evil; it’s a matter of how it’s used that gives it an alignment.”

Sixer frowned. “At the same time, sometimes pursuing knowledge can cause harm to those who end up involved. I understand that as someone who once pursued knowledge of cryptids and anomalies and not only turned the woods upside-down and ended up putting my own family in danger. If Thoth wants to look at the stone and is hungry enough for the knowledge of it that he won’t stop if Azura says no – or if he has another reason for it…then there might be some trouble.”

If this were merely about the pursuit of knowledge, there would be less cause for concern. But this goes far beyond the scope of gaining knowledge for knowledge sake. This is about Azura being slaughtered by a malignant void creature in his pursuit of unknown power.”

It almost sounded familiar, like something Aku himself might do. But the demon had made up his mind on the subject long ago — it was Azura with whom the stone belonged.

I must confess I know very little about this stone but there is a reason for why Gaster has been so relentless in his pursuit of Azura and her soul. For now, the stone’s power protects her. But without it…” There wasn’t much to say. It should be obvious what would happen.

Imagine for a moment if Gaster obtained the stone for himself either by trickery or force. He will destroy Azura for her defiance first and foremost. Then he will destroy all those who stood against him.” There were quite a few people, and their families, on that list, Aku and Sixer included.

Make no mistake, revenge is his only interest.

There came a persistent knock at Sixer’s door. “SIXFORD. It is I, Aku. There is something I wish to speak with you about.”

The question caused Sixer pause.

“That…depends on the situation, I think. I would like to say that he wouldn’t, but knowledge is – technically speaking – neither good nor evil. He seems kind enough to me that he wouldn’t willingly do such a thing.”

Aku shifted on the worn out sofa, making it squeak a bit before he settled. Regardless, he’d heard the hesitation in Sixer’s response.

Do you recall the Infinity Stones of which we spoke?” he said after a pause. “One such stone resides in Azura’s soul. Before coming to you, I spoke with Thoth. He told me he has interest in studying the stone.

The demon’s gaze fell once again on Sixer. It went without saying that learning this of Thoth had made Aku very leery.

At that, Sixer’s expression shifted. “She’s…I wasn’t aware of that. Hm.” He frowned, tapping his chin in thought. “I…wouldn’t be surprised that Thoth is interested in studying something with that kind of power. But he would have to talk to Azura and get her permission to do such a thing first.”

He frowned. “But you suspect that he won’t ask for permission, is that it?”

You are correct. I trust no god, former or otherwise,” Aku answered, making his opinion of gods abundantly clear. “Especially not when they are allied with a fiend like Gaster who desperately seeks to destroy Azura and use the stone for his own vile and vengeful purposes.

Aku didn’t like to admit that he was worried… But he was worried.

There came a persistent knock at Sixer’s door. “SIXFORD. It is I, Aku. There is something I wish to speak with you about.”

Indeed, Aku looked a bit more foreboding and tense than usual as he peered down at the kitsune.

How well do you know Thoth, God of Knowledge?”

“…somewhat? The two of us have spoken frequently. He has assisted me with a few things, considering that I was the one who got him to judge Gaster initially.” Sixer stepped outside and closed the door behind him. He kept a hand on the door handle, just in case he needed to slip back inside.

“Why?”

Mmhhh…” the demon rumbled under his breath and looked toward the furniture on the porch. He didn’t like relying on others for answers but where Azura was involved — and potentially immeasurable power — he had little choice. Sizing himself down a bit, he seated himself on the sofa.

Do you believe he would harm an innocent for the sake of knowledge?”

Ashi wished he had found them sooner as well. What else had her mother lied to them about? And why? Perhaps she would never know.

“I’m glad you found us now,” the girl replied quietly, offering her father a small smile. “I don’t think I want to see my mother ever again…”

Aku was thankful to have found them when he did. Otherwise they might have met their deaths and/or total erasure, according to that terrible vision of the future he’d had. Her smile, however, was encouraging. Though her words made him wonder if there was a need for change.

Perhaps I will arrange for a new trainer,” he contemplated aloud, tapping the tip of a claw to his chin. He didn’t want the High Priestess to become too much of a distraction in the girls’ training.

But you must realize, Ashi, there are things in this world and this universe that are much worse and even more terrifying than your mother,” Aku warned with a dramatic curling of his raised claws. indeed, there were samurai with magic blades and gods with divine powers out there waiting to destroy all Aku had ever stood for. But he didn’t want to frighten the child too much.

That is why you must train and learn the full extent of your powers.

“Ah hello Aku. Don’t worry, I’m not going to harm Azura. I’m assuming that is why you’re glaring.”

Thoth had assumed correctly. There were things Aku had heard as of late of which he did not approve. He continued to glare coldly at the god.

So you say,” he spoke, voice rumbling like distant thunder from an oncoming storm. “But I must wonder, Thoth, do you intend to help Gaster harvest what lies within her soul? Answer me truthfully, O’ Knowledgeable One.”

“No, unless she wishes me to. His idea is a good one, and I’ve seen the effects of that stone- how she hurt the little girl in the midst of chaos. But I won’t be doing such a thing unless asked…The knowledge of it, however, would be interesting, and if it is harming her…well… The answer is still no.”He waves his hand a bit, claws turning red before fading back out.

“Is there anything else you’d like to know?”

That stone is her only defense against Gaster!” snarled Aku. “If it is removed, he will torture and slaughter her, then use the stone’s power to further expand his vengeance upon the universe.

The demon’s words were sharp but at least he wasn’t screaming insults at the god. Not yet, at least.

In the time that I have known Azura, she has not complained of any harm caused by the stone. If there is harm being done, it is because she and her soul have been so physically taxed by the harm Gaster has already caused them. I don’t care how interesting it might be to study the stone. I don’t care about what knowledge could be gained from it. Azura is MINE and if you aid in harming her for any reason, I will retaliate!

It hadn’t escaped his notice that Thoth had taken on a different appearance. Normally, he wouldn’t care but the darkness he sensed from the god further roused his already heightened suspicions. his gaze flicked from Thoth’s physical appearance back to his singular eyeball.

And, yes, there is something else I’d like to know. When did you become corrupted?

Aku spoke not a word as he stood there glaring at Thoth.

“N-no,” she panted heavily. “I just needed a proper hiding spot.” she answered. “F-for now.” she slumped against Aku’s tree stump, taking the time to catch her breath finally. “Sorry.”

Aku growled softly under his breath. There was nothing in this world that didn’t seem to irritate him, no matter how small.

Very well but do not forget it here.’ There was no particular reason behind the warning other than Aku being his usual grumpy self.

As Casper rested against his trunk, he radiated visions of darkness at her — tendrils of black and two massive clawed hands curling toward her as if to grab her and pull her into the tree. It might give her a brief sensation of falling but nothing more.

What is it you are hiding and why?’ he asked, curiosity getting the better of him.
